Crucial Safety Tips For Heavy Equipment Operators To Avoid Accidents.

Heavy equipment is an integral part of any construction site. Bulldozers, cranes, crushers, and other heavy-duty vehicles can be seen at docks, factories and construction sites moving materials out of the site on a daily basis.

The sad truth is that a good percentage of accidents happening at construction sites are due to these beautiful giants. People, even after getting heavy equipment operation training tend to make mistakes while dealing with these giant machines.

Today, we will discuss some safety rules, that can save the lives of people operating these machines or labourers working around them.

  1. Equipment Operator Training: Workers should be thoroughly trained on the proper safety procedures to operate heavy machinery. They should get classroom as well as practical experience in topics like safety, safety features of the equipment, hazard identifications, and safe maneuvering of the heavy equipment.
  2. Be Aware Of Your Surroundings: Be aware of the vicinity you are working in like any obstacles in the path of the heavy equipment. Put barriers around to keep workers, bystanders and other people from coming near the machinery. An expert operator must be aware of the swing radius especially while working in a tight space. For their own safety, de-energize overhead power lines.
  3. Entering and Exiting Equipment: There is a correct and incorrect way to enter and exit any heavy machinery to maintain safety at all times. Use a three-point contact system to mount the machine just like climbing a ladder. Similarly, while dismounting never carry anything with you and do not jump out of the can unless desperately required.
  4. Inspect Before Use: This is a part of technical training of such equipment that an expert operator’s first and last set of routines should be to inspect the heavy machine they are working on for any loose nuts and bolts or broken parts that can lead to a major hazard. As it is said, if you will take care of the machine, it will take care of you.
  5. Use Equipment as Intended: Use the machine as per the instruction given by the manufacturer in the manual. A wheel loader should not be used to carry people around as an aerial lift.
Also, while carrying objects as intended by the manufacturer, be wary of its load capacity. Also, maintain a controllable speed on slopes.
  6. Wear Seatbelt: A seatbelt is the safety gear an operator can rely on for the safety of their life in an unfortunate situation or event. For example, if the machine is rolling over or tipping over, keeping yourself secure with the seat belt will save you from getting flung around which may be fatal.
  7. Keep The Area Clear: To keep people from coming in close proximity of the operating machine, place barriers around it. Use radio and hand signals to communicate with co-workers especially in the areas that are not in your direct sight i.e. when backing up.

Bottomline

Enrolling your workers on heavy equipment operator training is an important step in ensuring that the right practices are adopted by the operators for their own safety and the safety of the labourers working around.
